8 Great Films that Bombed at the Box Office

A movie's verdict depends on its box office collection. We have witnessed great films see box office failures and be in the list of flop movies of Bollywood. Many movies tanked at the box office when they were released like Sholay, Andaz Apna Apna among many others. Here is a list of movies that flopped at the box office but later turned out to be classics. But, in this list, we are focusing on the movies which were released post the millennium year 2000.


1. Lakshya (2004)

This is that movie that can make anyone motivated by the sheer premise of the story. An aimless young man joins the Indian Army suddenly but later regrets it as he finds out that an Army Soldier's life is really tough. He then rejoins the Army to prove something & the story takes a powerful turn.

This movie stars Hrithik Roshan, Preity Zinta, Amitabh Bachchan. It has a very good IMDB Rating of 7.9.

The movie was directed by the amazingly talented Farhan Akhtar of Dil Chahta Hai, Don & Don 2 fame.

2) Swades (2004)

The same year, there was another gem that did not work at the box office. A scientist working at NASA returns to India to find his nanny & take her back to America. While in this process of making his nanny agree to his wish, regains his roots & tries to solve the problems of his own Nation.

This movie stars Shah Rukh Khan, Gayatri Joshi, Late Kishori Ballal. It has an amazing IMDB Rating of 8.2.

The movie was directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, who had previously directed Lagaan & people were expecting something else from this movie which they did not find as appealing. But, now, it is a cult classic with an amazing story & great performance by the entire cast.

3. Rocket Singh - Salesman of the Year (2009)

This movie was skipped by many people as they thought it would be a typical & boring attempt at showing a startup attempt. But, they were wrong & this film turned out to be quite an accurate representation of people who want to manage their startup by facing hurdles at each step they take.

This movie stars Ranbir Kapoor, Prem Chopra, Mukesh Bhatt, Gauhar Khan. It has a very good IMDB Rating of 7.5.

The movie was directed by Shimit Amin of Ab Tak Chhappan & Chak De! India fame.

4. I Am Kalam (2010)

Many of us movie nerds & fans might not even have heard of this movie. This movie showcased that hard work is above luck & you can achieve what you dream of if you want to achieve that.

This movie stars Harsh Mayar, Gulshan Grover, Pitobash, Hussan Saad, Beatrice Ordeix.

It has an amazing IMDB Rating of 8.

The movie was directed by Nila Madhab Panda of Kadvi Hawa, Halkaa fame. It is available on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video & even free on YouTube.

5. Guzaarish (2010)

This movie was skipped by many due to the unconventional premise of the movie. Many found it to be quite boring & a slow burn. But, this movie boasts of some of the best performances of the cast. A magician due to a tragic accident files for euthanasia, while a young magician manages to convince him to pass on his legacy to him.

This movie stars Hrithik Roshan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Shernaz Patel, Aditya Roy Kapoor.

It has a very good IMDB Rating of 7.4.

The movie was directed by the visionary of Devdas, Black, RamLeela, Bajirao Mastani, Padmaavat fame Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

6. Tamasha (2015)

This movie has been misunderstood by a major chunk of people who watched it. They found it boring & not entertaining. This is not the case & if you have not watched this movie, we highly suggest you do so. You just have to understand the nuances in the story & connect with it as it not a surface film but a deep film with many things to be understood within.

The two leads fall in love with each other on a holiday in Corsica but do not disclose their identities. When they return to India, we see a completely different individual who is trying to find himself & his passion.

This movie stars Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Piyush Mishra. It has a very good IMDB Rating of 7.3.

The movie was directed by the amazing Imtiaz Ali of Jab We Met, Love Aaj Kal, Rockstar, Highway fame.

7. Wazir (2016)

This movie is a tricky one with good thriller elements & a good story. We are not sure of telling anything for this one as it might become somewhat of a spoiler, so we are not gonna do that.

This movie stars Farhan Akhtar, Amitabh Bachchan, Aditi Rao Hydari, Manav Kaul.

It has a good IMDB Rating of 7.1.

The movie was directed by Bejoy Nambiar of Shaitan, Solo fame. It is available on Netflix, Sony LIV, Amazon Prime Video.

8. Jagga Jasoos (2017)

The primary reason why this movie did not work, as we feel, is that this film was postponed multiple amounts of time due to production issues, VFX completion issues & whatnot.

This was a great take by introducing the Musical Genre to Indian Cinema. This is a Musical film which means many of the dialogues are also in some rhythm & tone. It's a great detective film with many twists & turns but suffered due to the long & postponement of the release of the film.

This movie stars Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Saswata Chatterjee, Chitrak Bandyopadhyay, Sayani Gupta, Saurabh Shukla.

It has an average IMDB rating of 6.5. This is because many Indians still do not understand & enjoy the concept of Musical Films which Hollywood has long ago implemented & rocked.

The movie was directed by Anurag Basu of Gangster, Life in a Metro, Barfi! fame.
